can be is challenging, there is no doubt about that. Lucky for us, there are tools that can lessen the “natural” challenges. One of those very important tools is a nursing pillow. I totally underestimated the power of a great nursing pillow the first time around. The Boppy Company makers of the beloved Boppy, launched a new nursing pillow in January of this year. We selected it as the Best Nursing Pillow of 2013 and for good reason. Today we are talking an in-depth review of why the Boppy Nursing Pillow pillow is such a great tool for successful breastfeeding and offering one as a giveaway!
The Boppy Nursing pillow (BNP) was designed alongside a lactation consultant to ensure all of the features, shapes and surfaces are the absolutle best for breastfeeding. The BNP has two sides – a contoured firm side and a soft, more plush side. They work in conjunction with each other to give you the support you need when you need it. The BNP has a detachable and easily adjustable belt to help you achieve and maintain your desired position. To top it all off, the entire pillow, yes the entire pillow is machine washable. You just remove the foam insert and the belt and throw the whole thing in the washing machine. No pesky covers to contend with just an easy to clean pillow.
Being that I am pregnant with baby #2 I tested the pillow for positioning, comfort and fit based on my experience the first time around. I tapped two of my mama “testers” one whose breastfeeding a six week old and another who is breastfeeding a seven month old. Here’s our thoughts:
- Firm side: The firm side up is great for the early days with a teeny baby. The top is flat but contoured nicely to support the baby and ensure proper positioning. The soft side being down creates a lofty, comfortable support for mom.
- Soft side: The soft side up is great for growing babies that may require less firm support. But don’t mistake the soft side for being unsupportive because it is not. It is curved appropriately to still ensure proper positioning. The firm side down is now helpful to provide a supportive surface for the pillow to rest on mom’s lap. The soft side is also great for use outside of nursing – like when your little one wants to sit supported on your lap.
- Detachable belt. The belt is a great feature. It is very easy to buckle which can’t be said for all nursing pillows with belts. The belt is also very easy to adjust while the pillow is on. The belt allows you to effectively put the pillow anywhere on your body so no matter your shape or size you can place the pillow in the best spot for you and your baby. The fact that the belt is just a thin nylon strap keeps us moms back side more comfortable as opposed to having a “foam” belt like some other pillows. And the real bonus is you don’t have to use the belt to use the BNP comfortably.
- Overall shape/size of pillow. The pillow is very nicely sized without being too much. Some other nursing pillows can make you feel like you are wearing a boat which make it difficult for moms to get comfortable or make adjustments during feedings. The shape of the pillow is comfortable with ample enough sides to provide the proper arm support without being bulky. The soft side is lofty and in our testing did not lose it’s “fluff” even with repeated washings.
The downsides? Our testing team has very few complaints. While I like that the entire pillow can be thrown in the wash one of my other testers would prefer there to be removable, washable covers. So in the instance of a spit up the cover can be changed and you still have your pillow on hand. Definitely a valid point but she solved the problem by using a swaddle blanket or burp cloth. The only other negative we threw around was the multi-functionality of the BNP. The Orignal Boppy works for nursing and is better than the BNP for activities outside of nursing such as being an infant supporter for those early days of sitting up, a tummy time helper, etc.
Bottom line, we are all huge fans of the BNP. The firm and soft surfaces are very helpful and grow with your child nicely. It is comfortable to use and best of all is effective. That being said, nursing pillows can be a pretty personal choice. Like some other gear, it may take trying a few different pillows before you find the perfect one but we definitely recommend trying out the BNP and have a feeling it just may be a good fit for you!
