Choosing an infant car seat can be one of the most daunting pieces of a baby registry. There are LOTS of options and lots of phrases and acronyms (like LATCH) that you may have never heard before but at the end of the day you just want your little one to be safe and comfortable while out and about. Britax, one of our favorite brands and makers of some of the safest car seats on the market make several great infant car seats. Today, we are taking a closer look at the Britax B-Safe Infant Car Seat and offering one lucky reader their very own.
We featured the B-Safe in our how to choose a car seat post and our initial review was that it was an excellent seat. Britax sent us a B-Safe for first hand testing and our view is even more so that the B-Safe is an excellent choice for an infant car seat. Let’s talk features:
Basic specification wise, the B-Safe is a rear facing infant seat that accommodates babies 4 – 30 pounds out of the box. By this I mean no special insert is required for small babies making this an excellent choice for premature or small babies. The inner insert comfort pillow is removable to provide more room in the seat as your child grows.
The B-Safe is an extraordinarily safe infant car seat. It has side impact protection with energy absorbing foam to minimize impact to your precious cargo in the event of a crash. Of course the B-Safe has a five point harness which is easily adjustable from the front to ensure the proper fit each time.
Speaking of the five point harness, the B-Safe’s harness has four positions and does need to be rethreaded to be adjusted (meaning you need to rethread the straps through the back of the seat). The re-thread harness is typical of nearly all infant car seats and we tested the B-Safe’s adjustable harness’ and it is easy to do.
The B-Safe is very easy to install using both LATCH and a lap belt.
– LATCH: The B-Safe has premium LATCH connectors which basically means they are top of the line, easy to use and work every time. We have tested several car seats with not-so-premium LATCH and believe me there is a BIG difference. The B-Safe’s LATCH connectors are also heavy duty and when properly connected to the seat you hear a definitive “click” knowing they are connected.
– Lap belt: The B-Safe has a built in lock-off located inside the base. The lock-off is a mechanism within the base that allows you to feed the lap belt through and snugly hold the belt in place. The lock-off’s help prevent a lap belt from unlocking and ensure that it locks in the event of the crash. The lock-off is a great feature and just goes to show Britax’s commitment to safety.
The B-Safe base adjusts to five different positions to active the proper angle no matter what type of seat you are installed the base on. And to make things even easier there is a handy level indicator to give you peace of mind you have the correct angle each time. The adjustable base is great (and easy to adjust). For example, in my car, the car seat goes in a captains chair that has a sharper seat incline than the bench seat in Tyler’s car. Without an adjustable base it would be difficult to achieve the proper angle in my more steeply angled seat. For this reason, the B-Safe works in nearly all cars and with its smaller footprint, fits in even some of the smallest cars.
The canopy is more than adequate and adjusts smoothly. The fabric of the B-Safe is one of my favorite features. It is smooth and comfortable while being totally breathable. And because of it’s almost nylon-esqe nature it cleans easily i.e., a wipe can easily remove spit up verse a more absorbent fabric that requires scrubbing.
Overall use of the B-Safe is simple. It is easy to get in/out of the base and even easier to use as travel system with Britax strollers. We just so happen to have the B-Agile and I popped it in to test it out – so simple. Loved it. This Britax combination is by far one of the best travel systems on the market. I am huge fan of the B-Agile totally separate of the B-Safe and think the two paired together is match made in heaven. If you have another stroller the B-Safe works with an adapter to fit most major brands of strollers out there.
Also worth mentioning – the seat of the B-Safe is a bit deeper than some other infant car seats. I don’t consider this a good or a bad thing but perhaps your baby could. Obviously, there is no way to predict what your child will think of any seat but it is a characteristic worth noting. The babies we tried the seat with as well as our editor’s baby all really loved the seat and had no issues.
Bottom line, the B-Safe is one of our favorite infant car seats on the market. Most importantly it is super safe but it also makes it easy on us parents to use, install and carry the seat. I love that it is great for smaller babies out of the box, has an ample canopy with nice breathable fabric and works seamlessly with Britax strollers.
I am beyond thrilled to be giving away a Britax B-Safe to one of you lucky ducks! The giveaway starts today, December 9th and ends Saturday, December 14th at 3pm CST.
