The infant car seat is one of the toughest pieces of gear to choose and one of the most requested product reviews we receive. All for good reason. Your infant car seat is one of the most used pieces of baby gear and even more importantly, it’s tasked with protecting your most precious cargo. One of the most loved and therefore popular infant car seats is the Chicco Keyfit 30 . Today, we are reviewing the KeyFit30 along with the Chicco Liteway Plus stroller- the two paired together make an incredibly snazzy and functional travel system.
The number one thing we all want out of an infant car seat is a safe place for our little one to ride. Lets face it we’d carry around 20lb seats if that meant our babe was safe. Luckily, we don’t have to do that but the KeyFit is one of the most highly rated for safety of all on the market (and lightest weight – more on that later). Chicco is an Italian company and thus the KeyFit meets European safety standards which are actually higher than U.S. safety standards giving it a leg up over its American counterparts. The KeyFit is line with energy absorbing foam for increased side impact protection so bottom line, you are getting a VERY safe car seat.
Other than the excellent safety ratings, my number one love about the KeyFit is the ease of use across all features. The base installs easily into your car via either LATCH or with your car’s seat belt. The KeyFit has premium LATCH buckles which is great because not all car seat’s LATCH buckles are created equal. Premium buckles are nice to have because they are easier to use and feel heavier/of better quality. The base has many cool features – a level foot that is powered by a spring which levels the base on your car’s seat. It also has a “center-pull” feature (located on the top center of the base) which simultaneously tightens the LATCH buckles so you are not fumbling underneath the base to tighten the buckles. The base has also has level indicators so you know you’ve installed the seat correctly. Both Tyler and I installed bases in our cars and it really is really easy. The added bonus is the peace of mind the leveler and bubbles create are a really wonderful feature.
The KeyFit has an easily adjustable five point harness with buckles that open and closes smoothly – nothing worse than fumbling around to snap in your babe. It simple to tighten and loosen the harness straps via the accesible release button on the front of the seat.
The canopy is ample with a sun shade that’s newer and a definite upgrade over previous KeyFit models and others on the market. I am really impressed by the fabric of the KeyFit- it’s been changed since the earlier models and it’s great. The fabric is breathable, padded and soft but still able to be wiped clean when necessary (and it will be necessary). From a functional and aesthetic perspective the KeyFit knocks it out if the park…
The KeyFit is comfortable. Margaux enjoys her rides in the KeyFit and numerous other readers and friends have the same feedback. The KeyFit does have a cozy removable newborn insert which further adds to the little little ones comfort.
One of the biggest concerns of parents when choosing an infant car seat is the weight of the infant seat. The KeyFit seat alone weighs 9 pounds – one of the lighter weight models on the market. This feature comes in very handy for out and about, lifting the seat in your car and really just adds to the overall ease of use of the KeyFit.
That being said, we literally have nothing negative to say about the KeyFit. It comes in several colors- one for every taste/style, is compatible (via adapters) with almost every other brand of stroller, is easy to use and most if all is extremely safe.
An important component to an infant seat is a compatible stroller. We were sent the Chicco Liteway Plus to test with our KeyFit. I should preface review by saying, umbrella type strollers aren’t my typically my favorite type of stroller so one has to be pretty great for me to appreciate it… And let me tell you the Liteway Plus is pretty great. My biggest complaint with other umbrella strollers is they are one dimensional- most can’t be used until 3+ months, few recline to multiple positions, you can’t use them with an infant seats and my list can go on. However, the Liteway Plus is multi-functional and grows with your child!
By far one of the coolest features of the Liteway Plus is that it takes the place of a snap-n-go type stroller because the KeyFit can snap right into the stroller. Awesome. No adapters needed to accommodate the KeyFit 30, just have the stroller in the correct positioning and you’ve got yourself a handy travel system.
Once your ready, the stroller easily converts to toddler mode. Raise the seat, attach a few buckles and you are ready to stroll with your toddler. There is an ample sized canopy with a rear panel that is also easy to pop on. An easily adjustable five point harness holds your little one in and you have the option of five different recline positions – all operated by a one hand release. Bonus – the Liteway Plus also comes with a parental cupholder which is a nice perk since often times those must be purchased separately.
The Liteway Plus glides smoothly and maneuvers well. The handles are covered in foam and at a decent height for both me (5’7″) and Tyler (5’11”) and I think would be for those shorter or taller than us. There is also an ample sized cargo basket which is a nice perk especially for an umbrella stroller.
The fold is super easy. With a the click of a few locks you are up and rolling and just as easily you are folded compactly back up. The Liteway Plus has a convenient carry handle that makes it super easy for not only day to day use but also travel. The Liteway Plus weighs around 20 pounds and is manageable to carry around. The compact fold allows the Liteway Plus to fit in the smallest of spaces.
The downside? Some complain they have had trouble with the wheels. We tested the stroller for 4+ weeks and never experienced any issues however, we spent most of our time indoors (thank you polar vortex). Other than that, I have got nothing for ya.
Overall the Liteway Plus is super easy to use and its ability to convert from use from day 1 up to 50 pounds makes it a multifunctional, grown with your child product which you know we love. The Liteway Plus + the KeyFit 30 is a great travel system and one that we would definitely suggest considering!
