We’ve featured many round ups of what we carry in our diaper bags over the years (and even a few round ups of our favorite diaper bags!) but a very minimalistic mama-to-be friend of mine asked me the other day, “Honestly, what do I need to have on me at all times?” Now everyone is going to have a different “Essentials” list, but we’re boiling it down to just the three things that would be pretty detrimental to be caught without. Sure, we all agree that sun screen in the summer and an extra hat in the winter are pretty good to have on hand, but today we’re talking the bare necessities. You don’t need much!
Diapers. I think we can all agree that Murphy’s Law will ensure that your baby has the fullest dirty diaper of his life the minute you realize you’re out of diapers in the diaper bag. Save yourself and always make sure to have enough diapers in the bag before you walk out the door.
Wipes. Again, self explanatory, but let’s just say toilet paper doesn’t do a great job standing in for tried and true wipes. Always make sure to have enough (and maybe a spare travel pack) before leaving the house.
Changing station/pad. You may argue that this is not necessarily a pure “essential” item, until you’re caught with a dirty diaper, a baby, and nowhere to change him but the trunk of your car. Believe me, you want a changing station. Bonus, get one like the Skip Hop Pronto that has a spot for your diapers and wipes and you’ve got an all in one essentials pack!
Bonus items: The above list is all you truly need to get by, but there are a few extras that didn’t quite make the list, but are very good to have on hand as you’re walking out the door. Entertainment (pacifier, small toys, your phone loaded with a kid friendly app) for when a boring grown up task takes longer than you expect, snacks and drinks or anything needed for nursing in case hunger (or thirst) strikes, and a spare change of clothes – so you don’t have to stop at Target after an untimely blowout happens.
The nice thing about boiling it down to these essentials is that you can pack them all up into a very small bag (or just carry the changing station loaded with diapers and wipes) and bring that with you – leaving a bigger bag loaded with all the non-essentials in the car!
