As many new mothers know, breastfeeding is deeply rewarding, but can be quite a challenge. However, there are so many products on the market that can help make this process a little easier. Nursing pillows are not a new product by any means, but with so many makes and models, it can be hard to decide which to buy or register for. We’ve already reviewed the Boppy for you which is a great option, but today we’re talking all about Dr. Brown’s Gia Nursing Pillow and giving one away!
Right away, you can tell the Gia is different from other nursing pillows by its shape. The patented angled design and half moon shape make breastfeeding comfortable for both mama and baby. This pillow was designed by a Lactation Consultant who wanted to create a nursing pillow that was simple, yet versatile in use. I can say after a few weeks of use, that this pillow both of those things. Other features include:
- Patented angled design which helps baby’s digestion and reduces reflux problems
- Wide surface area to prevent baby from rolling too far inward while nursing
- Patented “non-flat” design cradles + perfectly positions baby at the breast
- 100% cotton shell is soft, machine washable/dryable + anti-microbial
- Pillow insert is machine washable/dryable and keeps its shape!
- Angled design allows for multiple nursing positions
The angled surface area of the pillow is what makes this product really shine. If you’ve ever tried to prop your baby up on a stack of pillows, you know how maddening it can be trying to nurse when their head is either too high or too low. The incline of the Gia pillow positions your child at the perfect height for a proper latch. The angle of the pillow is also great for babies with reflux, who need to be nursed or bottle-fed in a more upright position.
I have a long torso and many other nursing pillows caused me to to lean forward while nursing, which strained my back and neck. The angle of the Gia pillow solved that problem for me and would work equally as well for petite mamas since there is a thinner side. Whatever your size or the size of your baby, this pillow is extremely customizable. The C shape works around the front, or you can lay it across your side if you prefer to nurse your child in the “football” hold position.
I also love how wide this pillow is. I tested the Gia out both nursing and bottle feeding my daughter and loved how the broad surface area kept her comfortable and I didn’t have to keep adjusting her from rolling off the side of the pillow. I found this feature to be particularly life-saving during middle of the night feedings when baby tends to be a little sleepy and our room is dimly lit.
Like any product you buy for baby, having the option to throw everything into the washer and dryer is worth its weight in gold. This pillow, no matter how many times you wash it, retains its shape and does not lose it’s plushness! It is so soft and thick. It does come with the option of a cover, which is also washable, but the pillow works just as well without one, too.
Overall, this is an excellent nursing pillow. It is very customizable and easy to use. For moms with newborns or those that exclusively nurse, this pillow will grow with your child, position baby for a proper latch and keep you comfortable during feedings. For moms who bottle feed, this pillow keeps baby at the perfect angle to help prevent spit-ups and saves your (or Daddy’s!) arms and back from tiring during feedings.
The Gia pillow giveaway starts today, February 6th and ends Sunday, February 9th at noon CST. Winner will be chosen at random, contacted via email and have five days to claim their prize.
