August is National Breastfeeding Awareness month so I polled our wise editors and asked for their favorite breastfeeding products. These are products we all used first hand and loved so enjoy. We’d love to hear some of your favorite’s too!
I’m going to go a little off-beat here and say a Camelbak water bottle (the bigger the better). I have never been more thirsty than I was during a breastfeeding session and the Camelback has a built in straw – which makes drinking while nursing much, much easier!
Also, a good nursing bra (like this one from Ingrid & Isabel). I’d totally recommend going and getting fitted for one that works with your shape and size. I went through too many cheap, uncomfortable bras and I wish I would have just gone and spent a little extra at the beginning to be properly fitted. There is nothing like an ill-fitting nursing bra to make you feel post-pregnancy frumpy!
Twin Z Nursing pillow: I could probably write a book about how many times this pillow has helped us in tandem feeding the twins (in fact, I wrote an entire post about it). It has been essential in safely and comfortably positioning the babies so that I could feed them at the same time (which is a necessity especially in the early days when each baby could nurse for 30 minutes or longer).
Bella B Nipple Nurture Butter: I never liked the way that Lanolin felt, but I desperately needed something to soothe and protect my nipples in the first month or so. This has a pleasant smell and you don’t have to wipe it off before nursing either! It is light (a little oily) but it does a great job at protecting and soothing.
Seamless Wireless Nursing Bra (like the Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra): Although I have a few other nursing bras with more of a shape to them, these are my go-to bras, and they have been since the very beginning. I love how easy they are to unclip (either one or both sides), and a big cup doesn’t get in they way of nursing (the way that molded bras tend to be). Plus, you still get added coverage with the removable cup. It looks a little like a sports bra, but it fits perfectly throughout the entire day.
Snacks and Water: Whenever I breastfeed, I get ravenous, so I always keep a tin of nuts, a bag of marshmallows, and a bottle of water by my nursing chair. That way, all of my cravings are met!
I would not survived breastfeeding without Lansinoh Lanolin, my Dria cover and the Medela hospital grade pump.
Someone recommend using Lansinoh Lanolin to prevent painful breastfeeding and I swear by it! I kept bracing myself for the pain that everyone describes and it never happened! I did however stain all my tops and nursing bras, be careful with that stuff!
The Dria nursing cover was by far my favorite! It keeps you covered from every single angle and makes public nursing much less stressful.
Harrison was premature and I had to pump every two hours for the month he was in the NICU. I honestly don’t know if I would have been able to nurse him if it wasn’t for this product. Forever grateful to my hospital grade pump!
Motherlove Nipple Cream: This product single handily saved my nipples and allowed me to keep breastfeeding on days when my nipples would have rather jumped ship. Might have ruined a few t-shirts but so worth the soothing comfort it provided
Breastpump Bra: Made pumping more convenient, and let’s face it anything that makes it easier to pump, especially once returning to work, was a keeper.
Zoe Organics Nipple Balm, saved my tatas during those early nursing days. I love that it contains organic ingredients and is super soothing but I also adore that it can be multi-purposed for healing other dry areas on your body, like knuckles and heels!
Gerber Organic Cotton Prefolds: were always bedside for cleaning up dribbles of milk, spit up and burping messes. They wash up so soft and are incredibly absorbent.
I wrote a full post about my nursing mama’s favorites but if I had to pick only three things:
Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter: we all have our favorite nipple cream and this one was golden to me. I discovered it the second time around with Margaux and it savvvvved me. Love it.
Bamboobies nursing pads: These washable and very soft nursing pad makes a big difference verse the disposable ones. These held in leaks and kept the above nipple cream where it needed to be for optimum healing and did I mention they are super soft?
water bottle: I am with Mallory and Dory here that I have to have water (and lots of it) with me at all times while breastfeeding. Not only for thirst reasons but for keeping up my supply.
So there you have a few of our favorite things for our breastfeeding journey – what are yours? Anything you are stocking up on for breastfeeding?
