Today we have a super savvy mama sharing her favorite baby products. Teresa, mama to sweet little Catalina has lots of favorites and gave us real life examples of how they make her life easier – which I love. She also included some of her favorites for making travel with a wee one go smoothly (Catalina has already been on several international flights). I know you’ll love Teresa’s insight and a BIG thanks from me to Teresa for putting together such an awesome, informative post. If you’d like to share your favorites – we’d love to have you! Email me for deets.
I’m a first time mom of baby girl Catalina who is 7 months old. I’m from Argentina but 8 years ago I came to New York to do a 1 month training and during that month I met my now husband who is from Peru. New York City has since become our home. I came across The Baby Wise while looking for a registry guide for those of us who don’t have extra space at home, and have been following the blog ever since. We live in Manhattan so you can imagine the size of our apartment.
Changing organzier from Dexbaby – It’s compact and spins, so everything is within reach. In the changer we have, Aquaphor Baby, Cleanwell natural foaming sanitizer and unscented wipes from CVS are must haves. I use Aquaphor for pretty much everything: to prevent diaper rash, to put on dried skin, etc. The foaming sanitizer is milder on your skin but as effective as other sanitizers and does not leave you with sticky hands. As for the wipes, I think I tried pretty much every brand, and ended up choosing one of the cheapest! It’s thick and does not break, yet it’s soft and glides gently on the skin to easily clean all the messes!
Precious planet whale of a tub – Bath time, Catalina’s favorite time of the day! Thanks to this tub which has a soft-grip foam surface and a stopper (which you remove once baby can sit), we can both relax and enjoy, “singing” and “talking” about our day. The tub is not as compact as some others but I hang it from a hook I put on the shower rod and I do not even notice it’s there.
Peg Perego Siesta Highchair – I really like this chair, young babies can already use it because it can recline, you can move it up and down, and move it around. Its sleek design matches that of our dining room, and, best of all given the size of our apartment, it folds to take little space.
The Discover n’ Grow Fisher Price products: The kick & play piano gymhas so far provided lots of hours of fun. At first, my daughter would just watch the toys hanging from the arch, then she started to grab them, and now she is “playing” the piano;
I love the jumbo playmat, its big size is perfect for the baby to roll over, has toys attached to it that catch baby’s attention, and unlike tiles, you easily fold it and store any where when playtime is over.
How many hours do you spend on a glider? I knew it would be many, many hours, so with my husband we agreed that we would not skimp on this one. After trying out many gliders, we chose the Dutailier Fogo|180 , what a great decision, so comfortable! I’m also glad we got it well ahead of the due date, given that towards the end of the pregnancy, it was the only place I could be comfortable. Next to the glider, I have this laptop table from Ikea, an inexpensive sturdy little table, height adjustable, which fits pretty much anywhere and holds what you want to have next to you when you nurse or when your baby falls asleep in your arms.
I’m a full-time working mom. I work full-time in a large financial services corporation and was a little anxious about returning back to work while still breast feeding. I’m among the lucky few in this country who get several weeks of paid maternity leave and where management supports breast-feeding by letting you take breaks to pump and by providing mothering rooms, and these factors combined with the use of these products helped me experience a smooth transition:
Calma breastmilk feeding nipple, I love it, I can so easily switch between nursing and bottle feeding, Catalina does not mind at all, one is not easier than the other;
the Bravado Designs Bliss nursing bra is comfortable, provides lots of support and pads do not show through, so you can be confident at work and wear any type of top;
On-the-go drying rack from Oxo Tot allows me to wash breastshields connectors and let them dry out between pumping sessions, saving precious minutes at work.
My husband is from Peru, I’m from Argentina and our daughter is already an international traveller (and already enrolled in a frequent flyer program!). We travelled to South America when Catalina was one month an a half and stayed there for over a month. Several of the flights were without my husband and these 4 products really helped me: the Boppy travel pillow allowed me to have her on my lap without having to constantly carry her, my arms were really thankful! Thanks to the Baby B’air flight vest I was also able to rest a little bit knowing that she was attached to my security belt. I was afraid that the cries of other babies on the plane would wake up Catalina, but I simply put the little sister of Cloud B Sleep Sheep, the sheep on the go, right next to her and it seems like she only heard the familiar sounds of the ocean, or rain ( her favorites) and did not wake up until the morning.
Apps, they go anywhere your smartphone/tablet goes, and I used these quite a bit.
Sleep Bug: a white noise app, the free version has 12 sounds and my daughter loved the “music box” one, it calmed her down and
Web MD: I used it especially during her first 3 months, and found it very helpful for new parents as it allows you to track feeding/nursing, diapering, sleeping without having to remember it. And when your pediatrician asks you something specific, you find it right there.
Spotify: you find pretty much any song you can think of! Found lullabies from my childhood! And you take that familiar music wherever you go.
Sleep, sleep, sleep
Arm’s Reach Co-Sleeper Bassinet – because there is nothing sweeter in life than opening your eyes and seeing your new baby sleeping safely right next to you. We were lucky enough to have friends lend us theirs.
My daughter is a very active sleeper, I don’t know how we would have survived without swaddling. We started with swaddle blankets but she quickly became too strong and would untie them. We first switched to Summer Infant SwaddleMe and then to HALO SleepSack Swaddle which allowed us to swaddle arms out
Other favorite products:
Avent Soothie with Binkie Bungee pacifier clip: ability to put your finger allows the baby to better latch on the pacifier, it’s safe because it’s a single piece and on top of that it looks so cute. The pacifier clip is a definite must unless you want to constantly pick up the pacifier.
Sunny Stroll from Tiny Love, attaches pretty much anywhere (different stroller brands, high chairs, etc) to provide long moments of fun.
Soy baby socks: Only socks that do not come off! And I tried several brands…
A big thanks to Teresa – seriously, so helpful!
