If you look out at all of the diaper pails, it can get a little overwhelming. When my younger brother was born almost 20 years ago, the must-have diaper pail was the Diaper Genie. I knew, however, that I didn’t want to buy anything that would need special cartridge or bags. That would just add one more cost onto our already-expensive diapering journey. After a friend suggested we look at the Ubbi, we went ahead and registered for it.
While we were researching diaper pails, we found this page that demonstrates how simply the Ubbi is to use. After using it for 9 months, we have been pleased with it as our diaper pail, although there are some negatives too.
- stainless steel contains ALL smells (until you open the top)
- top stays securely closed
- uses regular trash bags
- sleek look
- comes in many colors
- bags can snag and tear on the inside if you overfill it (on the older models)
- lightweight (easy for babies to pull over on themselves)
- price (about $80)
Overall, my husband and I would still recommend the Ubbi, although we do warn about the tendency to tear if overfilled. That is its main drawback, and even then it isn’t bad (please see the update below on changes to this in the newer models). We can easily double-bag a torn bag because we can use the cheap medium-size liners.
Other things to note: Ubbi sells a cloth liner, as well as plastic trash bags to work with their diaper pail.
UPDATE: I have gotten the opportunity to try out the new model of the Ubbi Diaper Pail, and I wanted to update this review. Older models had issues with rips when the bag was too full, but after listening to customers, Ubbi has made some changes with a smooth covering to the inside rim to remedy this problem. It really has fixed the issue! Now that’s customer service!
