I have to admit that I prefer SUV like strollers. I favor a stroller that has some serious wheels for off-roading and way more storage than I could ever fathom using, but that’s just me. We did register for the UPPAbaby G-Luxe Stroller, and I have found it useful when taking public transportation, navigating through airports, and keeping in the car in case of emergency (you know the scenario: impromptu stop to return clothes and the only parking spot is half a mile away and we have an appointment in ten minutes!!). While I am not necessarily an umbrella stroller kind of mom, I do think that the UPPAbaby G-LUXE Stroller has many wonderful features and could even serve as a primary stroller for kids three months and up! Note, our review is of the 2014 model of the G-Luxe, the 2015 model was just released with many similar features.
It reclines! The primary difference between the UPPAbaby G-LUXE and UPPAbaby G-LiTE Stroller is the recline. The UPPAbaby G-LUXE is the lightest reclining umbrella stroller. There are three recline positions and the foot rest can be adjusted to offer a more comfortable nap. Since Harrison is a full blown toddler now, he much prefers to walk. It is inevitable that he will get tired though, and having a stroller I know he can easily nap in gives peace of mind. The recline is an important feature if you plan on using this as your primary stroller or even just for vacations/on the go.
Easy to fold! It is super easy to fold, familiarizing yourself with it THOUGH, because it’s not typical! You use your finger to lift a levers on each handle and fold it shut. I would classify this as a one step action. It does require two hands, but that’s standard on most strollers. It does stands on it’s own when folded which makes it sanitary and easy to strap over your shoulder! To open, just release the latch on the left side and pull up on handle bars while pressing down on foot pedal to straighten it out.
You can carry it with a strap! I LOVE this feature. When taking public transportation, you have to take several steps to get on and off a bus or, in our case, many steps (we ride the ‘El’, Chicago’s city train system). This means I have to hold Harrison in one hand, a stroller in the other, while hiking up three flights of stairs! I can throw the UPPAbaby G-LUXE over my shoulder which allows me to have two free hands to deal with Harrison (and to hold the railing).
Removable Seat Pad. This is one of the easiest strollers I have cleaned, and there have been MANY! Just remove the seat pad and throw it in the wash. Especially if traveling to the beach, it’s so easy to get all the sand off.
Cumbersome: While it is true that the G-Luxe is the lightest umbrella stroller with a recline, it does still weigh 13.4 lbs (the G-LiTE weighs only 10.7 lbs, but does not recline). The weight does give it great stability and maneuverability on the one hand, on the other, it’s not the easiest to lug around when not crusing. It also does not fold down that well, think of an umbrella that’s closed but not secured. It also takes up the entire width of my trunk.
Footrest. For some reason, any time I open up our G-LUXE, the foot rest is contorted and it takes TWO hands to return it to the proper position. It’s one extra step to unfold the stroller, and not an intentional one. The point of the footrest is to support the legs and prevent them from dangling. Harrison’s legs don’t quite reach but as he gets taller, I know I will appreciate the utility and safety this feature provides.
Canopy. UPPAbaby is notorious for having one of the largest and best canopies of any stroller. The G-LUXE does come with an extendable canopy with SPF 50+ which is awesome, but I find that the canopy is super flimsy and any windy situation blows it all around.
Price. Priced between $189.99 – $219.99 the G-LUXE (the 2015 model $219.99- $229.99) is on the high end for an umbrella stroller and while I think the quality is great and it has been worth the money for our family – it is definitely something to strongly consider.
The UPPAbaby G-LUXE is a great choice for an umbrella stroller. It’s a great stroller to use for travel (even if it’s just local) and it offers a comfortably padded seat which is easy to clean. The deeper we get into toddler years, the more often I find us leaning towards grabbing the UPPAbaby G-LUXE for our excursions!
